Because this project is directly related to how it affects teens today, I decided to conduct my own survey using teens at Los Altos High School.
In this survey, I asked 36 teens about questions related to social media and schoolwork:
Questions and Answers:
Q1: What types of social media that you using?
A1; Most of the teens answered with at least more than 2 types of social media, the main ones being Facebook and Instagram.
Q2: How long do you spend on social media?
A2: The most used answers were between 1 to 2 hours and 2 to 3 hours. However, some people even answered with more than five hours.
Q3: How long do you spend on homework?
A3: Most teens answered between 2 to 3 and 3 to 4 hours. Still, people did also answer with more than 5 hours.
*The next question I asked was related to the Cloud-Learning program, where computers are now used regularly in classes, implemented in Los Altos High during the 2014-2015 school year.
Q4: Do you go on social media during class and, if they said yes, could you still understand the material?
A4: Most of the students answered Yes to both questions. However, there were even some students who said yes to the first question, but no to the second one.
Q5: What is your current GPA?
A4: Most students surveyed had a 3.5 or higher GPA with only a small amount of students answering with less than a 3.0.

Conclusion
What I discovered from this survey was that social media took up a long portion of time students have and even affected their schoolwork.
Because of the amount of time spent on social media, it affects how long it would take a student to their homework. However, I was surprised that most of the students who answered yes to fourth question on if they went on during class answered yes to the next question on if they could still understand the material. Another thing I was surprised about was how high people’s GPAs were. To make a conclusion on this, social media may have not hinder a person’s learning, but it can get a person distracted during class.
However, even though this conclusion still needs to be tested on a more higher level with more students with questions concerning the classes they take, the students who volunteered and answered this survey showed both positive and negative effects of social media.
